Klaviyo counts Apple machine opens toward revenue by default

Why is Klaviyo revenue higher than Shopify revenue?

Global · Tool: Klaviyo

In one sentence

Klaviyo can credit revenue to an Apple machine open — so email revenue can look higher than reality vs Shopify.

Emailrules interpretation

By default, Klaviyo’s attribution can count Apple’s automatic as the touch that “earned” an order. Shopify will not tell the same story. Know the setting, know the gap, and do not promise finance a number that is half machine noise.

Why it matters. This is how email teams lose credibility in board decks. Fix the definition before you celebrate lift.

What to do

Your move — not a lecture

This one needs you

No platform does this for you. One concrete move, then you are done.

Klaviyo does ship a setting to exclude Apple machine from attribution. It is off by default, and Klaviyo states that turning it on does not remove those opens from reporting.

Your part: Turning it on, shortening the window, and recomputing click-only and net of refunds before the number goes anywhere near a CFO.

What to do first

Open Klaviyo's account-level attribution settings, not the campaign ones, and look at the conversion window and whether count toward it. Write down the date you change anything, because there is no API for these settings and nobody is told when an agency edits them.

You can skip this if: You are not on Klaviyo, or nobody ever puts your email revenue next to the Shopify number.

Who this applies to

Every Klaviyo account on default settings, which is most of them. The gap is largest for brands with a high Apple share.

Checklist

  • 01Turn on the setting that excludes from attribution, and know that Klaviyo says this does not remove them from reporting.
  • 02Shorten the attribution window, and set open-based attribution to zero if your reporting needs to survive a finance conversation.
  • 03Recompute email revenue click-only and net of refunds before you put a number in front of an owner or a CFO.
  • 04Note there is no API for attribution settings, so if an agency changes them nobody is told.

That’s enough to act. The exact wording, the enforcement record and every primary source sit under Proof & sources, for counsel, bosses, or AI tools that need a citation. Not legal advice.

Source fact

By default Klaviyo attributes a conversion if someone or clicks within five days, and its documentation states that an automatic open counts. Klaviyo also states it has no way of distinguishing a true human open from an automated one. Separately, Klaviyo does not subtract cancelled or refunded orders while Shopify does.

What happens if you do not

Nobody enforces this. It is a default that flatters the platform, and the practitioner consensus is that the gap runs above 20 percent, with the usual folk remedy being to halve the number by feel.
